The survey had asked Birmingham people how the Council should best dispose of residents’ household waste – with options including recycling, incineration, landfill, Anaerobic Digestion (AD), Biomass and exporting it to Nuneaton.
‘There was one space left on the list – so we thought it might be interesting to add one obviously false option (just to check that people were paying attention). These ‘red herring’ categories usually only get 1% or 2% support – but this one got 90%: way ahead of all the others’.
‘Anyway – cut a long story short – we called NASA and asked how much it would cost to buy their Space Shuttle fleet, including some kind of maintenance and spares package. We’d also need to train up some of our Waste Operatives to fly the Shuttles, and NASA kindly agreed to loan us some qualified Shuttle crew members to take care of that side’.
